Robert Burns (1759-1796) fue un poeta escocés del siglo XVIII, considerado el gran poeta nacional de Escocia y una de las voces más influyentes del romanticismo temprano.
Entre sus obras destaca el poema “Halloween”, escrito en 1785 y publicado en 1786 dentro de su libro Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect.
En este poema, Burns retrata con gran detalle las celebraciones campesinas de la noche de Halloween en la Escocia rural: juegos de adivinación amorosa, hechizos, conjuros, supersticiones y ritos agrícolas.
Más que una narración de miedo, es una pintura etnográfica y poética de las costumbres populares, llena de humor, magia y observación social.
La obra muestra cómo, en la tradición celta, Halloween —o Samhain— era una noche de tránsito entre el mundo de los vivos y los espíritus, en la que los campesinos buscaban presagios sobre el amor, la fortuna o el destino. Burns convierte esa atmósfera en un canto a la cultura del pueblo, a la vez cómico y profundamente simbólico.

Aquella noche, cuando las hadas encienden su luz
y danzan sobre las colinas de Cassilis,
cuando galopan bajo el resplandor del fuego
y la luna derrama su pálida miel,
los ríos susurran nombres antiguos,
y entre rocas y arroyos
vagan los espíritus del bosque,
jugando en la oscuridad.
Entre las riberas trenzadas del Doon,
claro y sinuoso corre el agua,
donde Bruce empuñó su lanza,
se reúne la gente del campo.
Muchachos y doncellas alegres

Entre risas y juegos amorosos,
las muchachas se esconden,
los mozos las siguen,
y los besos furtivos sellan su suerte.
Las nueces arden en el fuego:
si dos se consumen juntas,
habrá amor duradero;
si una salta lejos de la otra,
habrá ruptura y olvido.
La vieja dueña reparte las nueces guardadas,
pues en ellas se decide el destino
de cada par de enamorados.
Algunas arden juntas en dulzura,
otras se separan con un chasquido de orgullo.
Así, el fuego juzga sin palabras
lo que el corazón aún calla
esa noche.
Una muchacha reza frente al espejo
comiendo una manzana:
espera ver, en el reflejo,
al hombre que habrá de amarla.
Otra siembra semillas de cáñamo al viento,
murmurando: “El que será mío,
sígueme y recógelas.”
Y entre sombras cree sentir pasos
que no son del mundo de los vivos.
El poema sigue con risas, sustos y conjuros:
el gato que asusta a los incrédulos,
la joven que cae al río al ver un espectro,
el viudo que busca fortuna en el fuego,
los ancianos que cuentan historias
de su propia juventud.
Y al final, cuando la noche se disuelve,
todos se sientan alrededor del hogar:
se sirven pan con manteca y cerveza tibia,
se cuentan cuentos de fantasmas
y ríen hasta el amanecer.
Porque en esa noche
los vivos y los muertos comparten el mismo fuego,

Then up gat fechtin’ Jamie Fleck,
And he swore by his conscience,

Some time when nae ane see’d him,

He marches through amang the stacks,
